Question

I have a strictly outside cat as a pet. She is pregnant and should be having her kittens any day. Today we noticed her acting wierd. She is a very affectionate cat, but today she wanted nothing to do with us. She was climbing the shed door like she wanted to be outside in the worst way. She was left out thinking maybe she had a nice place picked out for her kittens to be born, and that she was possiby in labor. A little while later I saw her under our propane tank, and went out by her to see if I could get her into a kennel so that her kittens werent born outside. She had spit foaming from her mouth as if she was extremely thirsty. She has gotten this way when she was in labor before so I didn't think too much of it. I picked her up and she let me put her in the kennel, but moaned the whole while. I noticed her bottom jaw is extremely swollen and there is what appears to be a long skinny pimple under her chin. Any idea what it could be?

We have given her amoxycillin, in case it is some sort of infection. She is also dehydrated so we have been forcing her to drink eye droppers of water.

Answer

Hello,

If it is possible for you to have your cat evaluated by a vet, now, that would be your best course of action. Due to her very pregnant state and her current symptoms, she needs to be seen by a vet in person, to determine if she may have ingested a toxic substance, if she has been bitten or stung by an insect or spider, snake, etc., on her jaw, if she IS in labor and having trouble, and if she's dehydrated, she needs fluids under the skin or IV. Droppers of water, for the time being is a good move on your part, but treatment for dehydration by the vet will be more immediate and more effective.

Amoxicillin can cause diarrhea in cats, as it disturbs the balance of the intestinal flora; also, I would not advise giving an antibiotic or any medication to a pregnant cat unless it's prescribed by a veterinarian.

I hope you're able to have your cat seen by the vet, ASAP, to determine the cause of her symptoms and help with her delivery, if necessary.

What are you leading towards with her symptoms? She was in a closed shed whenever it happened.

Hello again,

She was in a closed shed which was completely empty? You said she wanted out of the shed, so you did let her out, where she could have ingested/contacted a toxic substance or been stung or bitten by an insect, spider or snake (I don't know your location or what types of critters you have in your area), and you found her under your propane tank. She could have licked the tank or banged her jaw into it or another hard substance, outside.

Those are the possibilities I'm leading toward, with the symptoms you describe.
