Question

need help, have a 00 international truck, system is charged, pressures are somewhat normal, but at evaporator the high side (small lines) are cold and suction side are warm... Seems like it's trying to work backwards. The lines at the compressor are correct, large line to suction side, small tube to discharge. Thanks.

Replace your expansion valve. Your expansion valve is stuck closed causing the problem. I would also recomend replacing your reciever/drier since it is the filter for your system and removes moisture. What model and engine is your International?

We already put in a new expansion valve from the dealer. Still same problem as prior to replacing it. Rec/dryer has not been touched yet, but didn't think that would change anything. We did blow through the evap when the valve was out and no restrictions.

Answer

Anytime the system is opened, the reciever/drier should be replaced. It can only hold so much moisture and can only filter so much. It absorbs moisture while the system is open. Whatever it doesn't catch in the filter goes right into the expansion valve. Moisture alone can cause a freeze up. Blowing through the system only puts more moisture into it. You must also evacuate for at least 1 hour and recharge the system. The reciever drier is like your oil and fuel filters, once they get clogged, there is trouble.

Answer

There is also a possibility your expansion valve is defective. I would take it back as defective when you get the receiver/drier and put them both in at the same time, then evacuate the system for at least an hour before charging system.

Thank you for the reply! We will go after the rec/dryer next. We tested the evaporator with dry nitrogen, as we always use for testing. The system wasn't empty when we received the truck. We did evacuate it properly- prior to re-charging, after replacing the valve. In addition, when the system is running- you can hear a hissing sound at the evaporator, that I haven't noticed on others... But like I said before, it's like the system is running backwards. The condensor is working, one line warm the other cooler, the larger suction line at the compressor does not get cold or even cool. The evap in this truck has a series of small copper lines on the high side and one large on low side, those little lines are getting cold and large line is warm... Does this still sound like rec/dryer or restricted/plugged system somewhere?? We've done a/c work for many years and never seen anything like this one. I've even called techs over from other local shops to get their opinion- and we're all stumped. Customer is getting impatient... (Me too!) Truck model is a 8100 and has a cummins ISM engine. Thanks again!!

Sorry, the power went out shortly and I lost the prior communication. Thanks anyway!

Info Request

What direction is the compressor running, clockwise or counterclockwise? When did this start happening? Was anything done prior to this happening? How long has this same compressor been in this truck? What are the pressure readings, low and high? What parts were changed. Did this condition occur after a parts change? Are the A/C hoses attached in the proper high and low ports on the compressor?
