If you take it to a good independent shop you should get a better price. Mainly because they don't have the overhead, and generally they won't try to pad the bill as much with things you don't really need.

This is a definite sign that there is a problem. There is such a wide varity of probable malfunctions that it is hard to pinpoint it without being able to actually check it out. The brakes, bearings or even the engine/transmission mountings can create this type of noise. The one thing all grinding noises have in common is they are a warning of bad things to come if the problem is not addressed. You should get this checked as soon as possible because the grinding sound is the sound of destruction, so to speek. It means that two parts are rubbing, or dragging on each other in a way that they were not designed to. Bottom line is this type of problem will get much worse, and more expensive to repair as time goes on. The possibility also exists that this problem may be a safety issue, just another reason to get it checked out. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

I hope this helps, 100% satisfaction is my goal. If the answer is not clear, please reply and I will assist you more. When you're satisfied, click on accept. I don't get paid unless you do. A bonus and positive feedback are always appreciated, good luck and Thanks.

Before I totally panic - I just had a lube and oil change done 2 weeks ago - could something they did cause this problem?

It could be related to something they did, but it is hard to say. Get it checked ASAP. These things tend to be much smaller problems if you catch them early. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.
