Question

ok, i bought two hamsters a few days ago, a little fancy hamster and a big teddy bear hamster, peanut and snickers. i brought them home and me and my girlfriend were playing with them and they seemed fine. we put them in their cages and went to sleep. the little one ran into his house and the bigger one stayed up and ran on his wheel. i woke up in the middle of the night to use the head and i checked on the hamsters. the little one was still in his house but crying. the big one was eating some food and running on his wheel. i picked the little one up and it stopped crying. i put it back in its cage and he took off for his house and i went back to sleep. the next morning i didnt check on them as i was late to work, as normal. i came home from work and found the big one on its side not moving and the little one was dead in its house. i picked up the big one and it took one breath and died. what could have happened to them to cause this?

Answer

Hello,

I'm sorry for the loss of your hamsters. While there's no way to know the cause of death for certain without having a vet perform a necropsy, I suspect that the hamsters died of internal injuries from fighting. Both fancy hamsters and teddy bear hamsters are varieties of the Syrian hamster. Syrian hamsters are solitary and do not tolerate the company of others. By the time they are 3 to 4 weeks old, they begin fighting with their litter mates. Fights to the death are very common.

Most of the diseases that kill hamsters cause symptoms. Your hamsters were active and playing, so it doesn't sound like they were ill. If you had seen nasal or eye discharge, swelling of the body, diarrhea, etc., then the hamsters were sick, but it doesn't sound like you saw anything out of the ordinary. I suspect that when you first found the smaller one crying in the house, it was frightened from a fight. Even a small hamster fights viciously when it's being attacked, and both hamsters could easily have received fatal internal injuries in such a fight.

If you decide to get more hamsters, you should choose one of the dwarf varieties, such as Campbells. They're social and seldom get in serious fights. If you prefer the Syrian type, they'll need to have separate cages. If you have more questions, just let me know by clicking on REPLY.

That's the thing. They were in separate cages and they seemed perfectly healthy. We do have a rabbit in the same room as the hamsters. I wad reading online that bigger animals can scare smaller ones to death. Is this true? They were not in the same cage and seemed perfectly normal.

Accepted Answer

The rabbit was in a separate cage, and it's likely the hamsters weren't even aware of its presence. It would have had to have been hovering over the hamsters to scare them. It's possible the hamsters both came home from the pet store with a mild respiratory infection that rapidly got worse. If you had any air fresheners or scented candles in their room, that could have poisoned them. Beyond this speculation, There's no way to know for certain. I'm going to opt out of your question. That will open it up to other experts who might have some different ideas.
