Question

Yesterday, our cat threw up a couple of times. Went NPO from 2:00 yesterday until 2:00 this afternoon. Now, he eats a little, does this neck stretching thing every time he swallows after eating, and gags a few times. X-rays show no evidence of foreign body. Doctor finds nothing in mouth or throat. Piper the cat was given IV fluids, Pepsid injection, and pain injection.
Can this lingering trouble with swallowing be from scratchy throat? Do we need to take him back to doctor? Second opinion? Please help. We love Piper!! We'll love you too if you can help us!!

Hello,

I am so sorry Piper is having so much trouble.

Does he go outside?

Did your vet run any bloodwork?

Did your vet send you home with any oral medicines?

Did Piper get any people food before he started to get sick?

Let me know and I will try to help......

Piper spends most time inside. Goes out a few hours/day. Does soem roaming in bushes. Most recent "trophies" were lizard and baby rabbit. He didn't eat either one. He prefers litter box to digging in the dirt.

No blood work, no oral meds, no people food before he bacame ill. I think he swallowed something Sunday morning when he was outside because he acted like he wanted to throw up. When I returned from church, I found that he had thrown up and continued to gag. I fed him a couple of treats, just to see if her would eat. He ate them and threw up again. Also, he seemed to have swallowed a blade of grass or something that he couldn't completely regurgitate. When I tried to catch the thing between my fingers and help him, he jerked away. I probably over reacted and took him to an emergency animal hospital. Bottom line to that was no problem noted in study of mouth, throat and x-rays.

Thank you for the additional information. Your kitty may have ingested something outside that is making him vomit. He could be experiencing a condition called pancreatitis, which can be pretty serious and is typically diagnosed with blood tests and ultrasound. Pancreatitis typically requires hospitalization to treat, and can progress to life threatening severity if not managed quickly. Please see the following website for more information on pancreatitis.

It is also possible that your kitty is suffering from an illness that coincidentally became obvious after he was outside. Cats are considered to be geriatric at 8 years old and can be prone to illness as they age. Even though your kitty is just 8, it is still possible that he is experiencing the early stages of an illness. The 3 most common ailments known to afflict elderly cats are diabetes, kidney disease and hyperthyroidism. The symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, increased water consumption, increased urination, dehydration, weakness, weight loss, muscle wasting, poor hair coat, changes in behavior and increased vocalizations. Your kitty does not need to be exhibiting all of the symptoms to have one of the illnesses, and most of the time an illness goes undetected for a lengthy period of time because cats instinctually hide symptoms. And, diabetic cats are also more prone to things like infections (most commonly dental or urinary infections), and also are more prone to pancreatitis. The fact that there is no obvious answer on x-ray indicates that further diagnostic tests need to be run, and they should be done as soon as possible. If you wait too long, you may have to hospitalize Piper to correct any dehydration or electrolyte imbalances as symptoms continue to develop without treatment. Please let me know if I can be of further assistance. If this has been helpful, please hit the green accept button. Best of luck with your handsome man, I hope he feels better soon :)
