Info Request

Hi XXXXXXXX,

I have a couple of questions for you?

1. Are the cataracts in both eyes or just one?

2. Is there an underlying cause for the cataracts like diabetes?

3. Are you looking for non-surgical or surgical options?

As for the hearing, unfortunately there is nothing that can be done.

Both eyes but the right eye is noticebly worse. No underlying causes other than hereditary, so I have been told by her regular vetinarian. I am looking for non-surgical treatment.

Answer

Well, unfortunately there are no medical treatments to get the cataracts to go away. There is only treatments to treat any pain or discomfort that may be associated with the cataracts.

The ONLY way to remove the cataracts is with surgery (phacoemulsification). Is there any reason you are opposed to doing the surgery?

Cost of the surgery is the reason for looking for alternative solutions. I have heard about cataract eye drops and would like to know if they are helpful.

Answer

There are a lot of drops that claim to dissolve cataracts but honestly they do not work. You can certainly try them but don't get your hopes up. They won't hurt anything (except your wallet). I'm sorry, I wish I had better news for you. Your only hope in restoring vision is the surgery.

I wish you all the best. Please let me know if you have more questions.

Do the drops at least slow down the progress in cataracts? Do you have any recommendations on which eye drops to try?

Accepted Answer

No. The drops do nothing.

Ocluvet (N-acetyl-carnosine) I guess is the one I would try if I was going to try something. This is a topical antioxidant.   The active ingredients listed are not going to help the cataracts and the product is listed that way to avoid having to say the N-acetyl-carnosine is an active ingredient (that is listed as a preservative). It is not regulated by the FDA and there have been no CONTROLLED studies done on the product. The last time I checked it was about $63 a tube.
