Question

Model is Ruud Acheiver 9 Heat Pump. We cut the breakers, both at the unit, then at the main panel. Inside, the fans start working, but the air conditioning did not cool. Outside, the main fan did not operate.

The unit had not been on for about two weeks, as our swamp coolers were adequate. The AC is mainly used when temperatures exceed 103 degrees.

Is there a "reset" switch on the unit itself or some other area to look before calling an HVAC company? We want to make sure the basic troubleshooting is done first.

Hello, the first thing is to determine if power is actually getting to the unit. The ac unit need 2 things. 220volts waiting to be told to go to the compressor and fan, and 24 volts sent by thermostat to close the relay allowing the 220v go through. So first is to verify 220v is there and available.

yes- power appears to be getting to the unit. The unit is about nine years old and has not had this problem in the past. A few years ago the breaker tripped, which was an easy fix. That wasn't the case this time.

Other than the breakers- is there a different way to see if power is getting to the unit?

do you have a meter?

Not a hand meter to attach to the unit itself - if that is what you mean. IF power wasn't getting to the unit, would the interior fans turn on when the thermostat is lowered?

correct, the indoor unit gets power from a different source but gets the same 24 v signal as the ac. Lets check a few things that we can. When is the last time the condensoer ran?

Probably 3 weeks ago - we use a swamp cooler, as it is cheaper to run and adds humidity for our wood furniture.

If someone stood inside while someone stood by the ac unit, turn ac on from stat and see if you hear a loud click from the outdoor unit.

Sorry - we were out with the family and did not have a chance to check on the air conditioner for a while.

There is no click outside when someone turns on the air conditioner from the inside. No sound or activity at all.

I am afraid the remainder of my suggestions would require the use of an electric test meter.

My initial question is if there was a "reset" button on the unit. Is there one? I don't have an "electric test meter."

Some units had resets but were an option on most models. If you give me the first 4 letters of your outdoor model number I will give you a link to the unit as well as see if it has a reset. Keep in mind if pushing reset you will need to find what tripped it. Get me those 4 letters and I will forward your information.
