Question

I rescued a stray pregnant momma cat from a business area where people were trying to kick and stomp at her. I've had her two weeks and have given her sweet condensed milk, chicken, tuna and purina kitten chow. She is now huge and the babies are tight in her belly. I have no clue how pregnant she is, but she is now leaking a yellowish cream like substance from her. What are the telltale signs that she is going into labor?

Answer

If you get a little drop of milk when you gently squeeze one of her nipples, she is most likely going to give birth within a week, or so. I assume the fluid she is leaking is coming from her vagina. If so, she may have an infection, so if she starts to act lethargic or won't eat, you should have her examined right away. There is a disease called FIP (feline infectious peritonitis)that can cause a cat to have a very swollen belly. It is a virus that's inevitably fatal.

It was nice of you to take the cat in. If you can, you should have her tested for feline leukemia and FIV, then vaccinated after the kittens are born (assuming she IS pregnant). Good luck to you.
