Question

I have a 1992 Mitsubishi Demonte..has 47,360 miles..my check engine light went on and the car hesitated when accelerating..took car to repair shop where they checked the computer and engine..I was told that the timing belt was causing the problem and had to be replaced along with the water pump saying if you change the belt you should change the water pump..
Afthe the belt and water pump were replaced the engine light and hesation were still there..I took the car to another shop where a engine diagnostic test was performed and determined that the problem was not what was repaired but the needed ignition wires, plugs, and fuel injection system service performed..What is your opinion?...Can the timing belt cause the engine light to come on?...

Yes, if the timing belt is loose, stretched, or has skipped teeth, it could potentially cause the light to come on. However, it doesn't sound like this was your problem. When the shop did the diagnostic, they should have pulled the trouble code(s) that caused the light to come on. A scan tool will tell the technician which malfunctions have caused the light to come on. There are many different things that can cause this. If you can tell me what trouble codes were pulled during the diagnostic I can point you in the right direction.
