Question

gelding approx. 4 yrs. old has colic. Vet came this morning and gave him a shot for pain, but can't reach vet now... or any vet!! Horse is still bad, shakey, trying to lay down. He's pooped once in last several hours; we're giving him mineral oil through a syringe, so far about 1 pint.... what should we do?

Answer

Welcome to Just Answer

In the meantime while trying to reach a vet to check your horse I would walk him, 20-30 minutes at a time with at least a 30 minute break in between. The mineral oil may help. I'd hold off food until this condition improves. Very small amounts of water are probably going to be okay. See if you can get his bowels moving by the walking. Listen for gut sounds to see what is going on. Loud gut sounds are usually a good sign.

I hope this helps

he's just recently peed, he's passing gas like crazy, he's laying down but no longer thrashing, his ears are up. We were told to try to get 2 pints of mineral oil down him, and now have 1 pint down him.
Should we try to get another pint down him? Do you think, with this new information I just gave you, the crisis has passed? Is there anything else we can do for him, cause we're doing what you said already.

Answer

That is good news that he is at least passing gas, I'd like to see some poop, but gas is better than nothing. You can try to get the mineral oil down, won't hurt at this point. Keep up the walking and lets hope for the best. If he does not continue to improve your vet might want to tube him.

okay, so guess that's it for information. Don't want to give him too much mineral oil, he's small and still slightly underweight, so don't want to cause diarrhea. He has pooped once in the past 4-5 hours. thank you.

I hope he does okay. I'm encouraged by what you've told me so far. If he continues to improve you can try giving him a small amount of bran mash or something like to see how he does with it.
