Question

Tech replaced fan motor on my Luxaire unit. Work was completed at 8p.m. last night. Temp in house was 70 degrees when I left at 7a.m. today. When I returned home, the fan had stopped working again. Tech returned, checked all levels and all were okay. He did say the suction should be 58 but was 72 (whatever this means). I had turned power off when I realized fan had stopped working. When power was turned on, fan started working again. Two hours after tech left, the fan stopped working again. Tech told me to leave on so he could find problem but unit top was uncomfortably hot to touch so I was scared to leave on. No freezing. I think I noticed a psst sound but unit was making a loud noise, I'm not real sure.

Answer

I would say it probably has the wrong capacitor or the capacitor was not changed when the motor was. Some tech have difficulty wiring some of the replacement motors that have their own dedicated pair of wires for the capacitor. They are not direct changeouts and the wirinf ,if not done correctly acts as you described.

I don't think it was the old fan was broken. I think he just replaced the fan and the same thing happened again. After running a while the air is not as cool and the fan just shuts off. When I turn the power off for a while, the outside cools off and the fan starts back. You still think the wiring could be done wrong?

Accepted Answer

It is wiring or capacitor. The fan runs but is getting hotter due to the miswire/capacitor. Once it gets so hot it goes off on what is called thermal overload. A switch built inside the motor reacts to heat and shuts the motor down. Once it cools it starts over and runs until it overheats again. I am going to stick with the miswire or wrong capcitor. The dog is my Sherman, a Newfoundland, he is my shadow when I am home.

I couldn't see the picture real well, old eyes! He looks great. Mine is Wilson. He too is my shadow. My husband of 3 years is learning to tolerate. He will be 8 on 9-11. My tech is coming back and I am going to show him your recommendation because I think he is totally at a loss. Thanks again.

Ask him if the motor wired differently in regards to a capacitor and does the microfarad match. Is he coming back tonight?

Yes, should be here any minute. I doubt he'll know what a microfarad is. LOL but I'll ask. Thanks. I'll get back with you shortly.
