Question

I have a 1987 chevy suburban 1/2 ton 4wd with a 350 engine. I am currently experiencing a problem with the engine where the idle is very erratic (races up and down all on its own) and quite often stalls. When it stalls it is very hard to get started. When I finally get it start its appears as if it was flooded with fuel. I have sensor tester that I purchased locally. I have replaced the throttle position sensor because the tester showed it bad. The new checked good but problem still exists. I then tested the idle control motor and I could not get it to respond according to the tester so I assumed it to be bad. The new one did not respond any differently but I replaced anyway. Problem still exists and actually getting worse I believe. I had a spare ecm module so I replaced it just for trouble shooting but to no avail. I have shopped around trying to find the original factory service manuals for this vehicle but they seem to be out of print. Please help if you can.

No, the idle screw has not been messed with. I have not experienced any "service engine lights" so I have not checked for any codes. This problem has just begun over the past week or so on its own. I have performed no maintenance on this vehicle during this time. I'm just now begining the troubleshooting process.

ok..well it sounds like the computer is trying to correct the idle and it cant thats why its hunting for an idle..first thing we need to do is make sure there are no vacuum leaks at all !! can you make sure there are no vacuum leaks and also dont forget to make sure the tbi gasket under the tbi to the intake is not sucking in air..if we rule out that there are NO vacuum leaks then we can move on..ok...let me know

Ok, I have completely rebuilt the TBI and installed all new gaskets. I installed new gasket at base of TBI to insure there is no leak between the TBI and intake manifold. I removed and inspected each vacuum hose to insure they are in good shape. I found no decreps there. ????

ok so we have no vacuum leaks..thats good...ok..there are no codes right?and the base idle scew for the throttle did you touch that yet?we need to get to that srew back it off so the screw os off the throttle then turn that screw in just till it cracks open the butter fly like a 1/16 of an inch..then see if the idle gets stable or too high or just too low..then we will go from there...did you under stand what i said to do?

I have checked for codes and there are none. I have done nothing with the base screw. I understand what you want me to do. I will reply back later this evening. I'm helping a friend move and working on my truck both today.
