Question

I have a 1998 S 10 pickup with a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder engine. I was told by other mechanics that all 2.2 engines were the same so I went out and bought a used 2.2 engine out of a 1997 caveleir and when I srarted to pull the engine in the truck I noticed some differences. So I got on line and made some inquieies. What I found out was the block castings were the same between the two but the cam, pistons and crank are different. The "97" pistons have a deeper dish and the cam in the "97" is ground for less midrange torque and it wouldn't bother me to be down a little on power, what conceens me is the timing notches on the crank are in a different possition between the two years and the crank sensors are the same for both years. My question is can I bolt the head off of the "98" enginr on to the "97" block and drop it in the truck and make it work or would the timing notches on the crank be too far off for the computer in the truck? I don't want to spend good money after bad.

would like to help if i can...you hit the nail on the head..so to speak..anyone of these swaps we have dont we swap the heads ..and use the original truck head because the car head is different..plus you get a new head gasket out of the deal...as for the crank notches..the notch ring or notches is the same...swap the heads and use the bottom end off the car block...it will work great...everyone we have done worked great...so use the 98 truck head and put it on the 97 block...works everytime...hope it helped
