Question

I have a 1995 Chevrolet K-3500 Pickup Dually Truck. It was running fine. The next day I tried to start it and it would turn over, but would not start. I tested the Spark Plug wires for spark, and found that there was no spark at the spark plugs, nor any spark going from the external coil into the distributor. I went to a wrecking yard and found a control model and coil from a wrecked chevrolet truck similar to mine. After I installed the used parts, the truck still would not start. I then purchased a brand new Distributor Control Module and a New enternal coil and installed both of them. I still do not get any spark at the spark plugs nor at the distributor from the external coil.

Also when I turn on the key to try to start the truck, I do not see any gas flowing from the fuel injectors into the throttle body bowl. I also do not hear the Electric Fuel Pump making any actuating noise either.

Accepted Answer

1. Check B+ to ignition coil and Ignition Control Module (ICM) on the Pink wire during cranking

2. Disconnect the pickup Coil from the ICM. Turn the key on, engine off. Install a spark checker on the distributor side of the coil wire. Tap test terminal "P" (this will be the terminal corresponding to the Green wire of the pickup coil) of the ICM. Check for spark output from the coil wire.

3. If spark is present, ohm check the pickup coil, between the Green and White wires while disconnected from the ICM. A good value will normally be 700 - 1100 ohms.

4. If the resistance is correct, check the pickup coil AC voltage output during crank. Minimum output is 0.70 AC volts or greater than 709mV A/C.

5. If the resistance is good and output voltage is low, replace the distributor shaft.
