Question

I have an eight year old female, spayed cat, she is mixed but looks primarily Birman. Her coat has never matted, but just all of a sudden with in the last 2-3 weeks her coat really gets matted and almost looks like it is stuck down. Also she is losing quite a bit of hair. I moved a month ago from one house to another, thought maybe that stressed her out. She is an indoor cat along with 2 others that are also indoor cats. The three have been together for about 5 and 4 years. I cannot brush out the matted hair, I have to cut it out or trim it out as best I can. Thank you for your consideration.

Dear friend

The most common cause for matting and hair loss is onset of hyperthyroid. They also exude a sticky substance from ntheir pores causing matting and a gunky feeling.

Here is a link for more information for hyperthyroidism in cats.

I would have some bloodwork run with a T 4 test.

You can shave the mats with a mens battery operaed beard trimmer.

Of course stress may be a factor because cats HATE any change in their location.

Please let me know how things are going.

Best of luck in your new home,
