Question

Hi there,

In Jan I bought a 3drs Grand Vitara from a private seller (05 Dec made, 06 Mar sold to the first buyer). In Mar when I got a 90k service done, I was told there's some noise in the 1st & 2nd gear need keep an eye on it. Recently I can hardly use the 2nd gear, changed the gearbox oil but still the same. Had a look online, there're a few people having the same problem, I was just wondering if this is a Suzuki default problem, where can I get it fixed, your advice would be truly appreciated!

What you need to do is to contact a Suzuki dealer and ask them if there is a recall on this problem. If there is then you should be able to get it repaired at low cost or no cost. If there is no recall then the most inexpensive way to repair it is to find a low mileage used transmission and have it installed. The other alternatives are rebuilt, and new. I will list some links below for used transmissions. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

Hi Dr Hamman,

Thanks for your quick reply, I went there last week & was told they never heard this problem, but from what I searched online there're actually few people having the same problem.

Also what's 'low mileage used transmission', sorry for asking silly questions - totally have no ideas about car, sorry!

Really appreciate your help!

Answer

no problem. A low mileage used transmission is a transmission that has been used, and it was removed from a car without many miles on it, like if the car was wrecked. The usable parts are tested, and recycled, and sold as replacement parts. So you can buy a good used transmission at a small fraction of what a new one would cost. It is normally a good alternative.

Hi Dr Hamman,

Sorry for replying you so late, been busy the whole afternoon.

Thanks for your answer, but I was just going to see if you experts ever heard about this problem from suzuki grand vitara, if it's a common problem when I go to see them i can use your expertise to prove, as the other day when I was there the guy was just telling me never heard about that, try to push the break while I'm changing gears and that's for all manual cars, it doesn't make sense, does it?

Thanks!

No don't use the brake when you shift. If you have a bad gear just skip it when you drive. You should rev a little higher than you normally would in 1st, and go on into 3rd. This may help you be able to use the car. As far being able to prove something to Suzuki, you are basically powerless unless corporate Suzuki recognizes this as a defect that they will address. Believe me I have been in the auto business for years, one person is powerless against these huge corporate machines. Your dealership is also powerless against the big company they represent. It would take a class action lawsuit, and hundreds of people involved to even get Suzuki's attention. It would cost them hundreds of millions to admit they had a defect, because they would have to recall and repair all of them, it simply will not happen if it is out of warranty. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.

So if I don't fix it for a couple months till I get enough money to fix, it won't get worse as long as I don't use the 2nd gear?

I would say that it is best to not drive it, but if you take it easy and don't use second gear the chances are decent that it will be OK. The big warning sign is if it starts making any more noise or develops new symptoms. At this point you will know that you should quit driving it and the transmission damage is getting worse.

Now what comes to mind is the fact that if you locate a good used transmission from one of the recycler on the list I gave you, then whether or not it will hurt the transmission will be a mute point, because you will not be reusing your old transmission. Because of you saying that you need to save a couple of month, I would like to remind you that using a recycled transmission will be the least expensive way to repair the vehicle. If you have any more questions I am here to help. Good luck, and Thanks for using Just Answer.
