Question

My dog ate about 5 pounds of biscuits. Her stomach is extended and firm. She is getting up and down slowly but it is hot here and she is a 70 pound Husky. So, it is somewhat normal for her to move slowly when it is hot. It does seem like her belly is getting in the way of how she normally gets up from a prone position. She has been drinking water. She ate the biscuits about 8 hours ago and has not had a bowel movement or vomited yet. Although, she has been passing gas. Should I be concerned or just give her until tomorrow to work it out of her system?

I have been watching her for signs of Bloat. I have not exercised her since she ate the biscuits and she has been laying down the majority of the day.

Answer

I'm sorry to hear about your dog. She is likely quite uncomfortable between the biscuits in her belly and the heat.

I would definitely not give her any food for the next, at minimum, 12 hours, if not 24 if she's not completely better. Keep her activity level to a minimum, as in short leash walks to do her business, absolutely no running/ jumping, etc, and let her rest so as to avoid her stomach twisting.

She'll be able to pass this out one way or another over time, but it's important she never gets very bloated appearing, unable to defecate, trying to vomit with nothing coming up or another other severe signs. I'd do my best to keep her in a cooler area if you can so you can better judge if it is heat getting to her or if she's more bothered by her belly.

If you want to, you can induce vomiting, if she ate these within the past couple of hours. This would require a tbsp hydrogen peroxide, then moving her belly around with your hands. It can only be repeated once if no vomit produced in 15 minutes. Then, again, the most important thing to do for her is keep an eye on her, do not offer any food at all, very very limited water only when necessary due to heat, and keep her calm.

Best wishes,

Christine

She is quite afraid of fireworks and fireworks have begun in the city we live in. Do you have any suggestions on how to keep her calm since she cannot be stressed with all of the biscuits in her belly?

Accepted Answer

Without a prescription sedative, it's not likely, and I don't recommend even trying benadryl now, which doesn't work well for this, because it won't absorb well in her belly and she needs those acids in there to digest this food overload. f you have a crate or small room she can go in furthest from windows, that's the best you can do under the circumstances, unfortunately.
