Question

worked @ my husbands chiropractic office for the past 19 years. I've worked for him starting the second year. Practice is in his name. I never received a "paycheck" although we did do W-2'sfor most years. This has been our sole income for the past 19 yrs. I am thinking of getting a legal seperation, he has pretty much cut me off to our accounts that are joint since I've left working with him. how would this work monereraly, until I can support myself fully.

Answer

You can file for separation and ask for a temporary support order where he pays you spousal support and covers your health insurance, etc, until you reconcile or a final divorce is issued.

Does asking for support mean that I will get it. and would he stay in the house of would I he pays I maintain it

Answer

Since you were working for him and now you are unemployed then yes you will get support until you can find a new job to support yourself. You are sort of like a wife who did not work at all and it is very likely you will get the house and help with maintaining it.

OK I worked there while taking some classes for massage therapy, I am lisensed in Illinois I have a small room @ the office However I am part time and do not make nearly enough to fully support myself. I need to get more skills to do so I will have to get a degree or do some vocational training in a different field. He cant pay forever, so would he have to contribute to this?

Answer

Yes he would have to continue to pay the support usually for half the time the marriage lasted so in your case it would be between 9 and 10 years or until you remarry. But since you can have part time income working as a massage therapist he would only have to pay for what you are unable to make yourself.

Accepted Answer

Yes if you divorce the assets will be split as evenly as the court finds to be equitable, which is usually 50/50.
