Question

AMANA TEMP ASSURE HEAT PUMP MODEL: RHA3682A, MFG#: P1221504C, SER#: XXXXXXXXXX

Fan needs push start then runs. Compressor tries to work (buzzes) at probably 30 second intervals, but will not start. Hooked up guages to verify no compression. Resting pressure 120-150 PSI. Have 120V at all 3 legs to compressor. The Yellow wire from the run capacitor has 120V when connected (measuring at the capacitor), but less than a volt when the harness is disconnected from the compressor(measuring at the compressor end of the harness).

Do I need a new unit, or is the run capacitor a likely candidate? I know very little about HVAC except it sure would be nice if it would work right now.

Answer

Your run capacitor being bad would cause the symptoms you are describing.

Leave the power off so the compressor can cool down while you go and get a capacitor.

If this doesn't work, a new unit? Don't worry, I'm going to hit the accept.

Accepted Answer

You don't have to replace the whole unit.

You can replace just the compressor.

OK. Thank you. I hope the capacitor does the trick.

Answer

Best of luck.

If you see any budging or oil on the capacitor that would be a sure sign of it being damaged.
