Question

Most was include in the detail, other than i did not expect to pay $96.24,
and have no repair done. The repair guy said they would include the above amount into the $2,800.00 if i go with them only.
My unit is 3 ton, Mod.# TTx736A100A2, Serial # D19292223, name plate Date: 5/89, Refrig.22 Factory 8 lb 2 oz. My evaporator is in the
attic aprox.25 ft to 30 ft from the outside condenser.

Service guy said can not be fixed, is this TRUE, is this TRUE. a tiny leak can not be fixed. This is my Question WHY,WHY it can not be fixed?
Cost reason, operational reason, safety reason, time reason, what reason, manuf. reason? Its a simple honest question, that should have an answer, I do not have that answer, but would like to bring-it to
LIGHT so that honesty might still come thru the cracks. thanks

Did the service technician show you the refrigerant leak?

The technician had the cover from the outside unit off, the fan blade was turning and he pointed the gun sensor above the fan moving and moved the gun sensor head around a bit before it started to beep. At that point he told me the leak is "down there inside somewhere" for this outside unit condenser. That is all he said, he did not pin point the leak itself. I assume, to know exactly where the leak was, he would have to take the sides of the unit off, which he did not. After that he told me that I needed a new condenser and the unit had to be replaced and can not be fixed.

Answer

In some cases you can repair the leak.

If your condenser has one row of coils the leak can be fixed.

If your condenser has multiple rows of coils then the technician will not be able to repair the leak.

Do you see any dark spots on your condenser? Do you see any spots that dirt has collected from oil being on it?

went out to check the unit its 2:23 pm sun out, nice and clear day, dry, seen no,no dark spots on all four sides of the grill-vents,no dark spots, just some light dirt from air and

rain dryed on the unit. The Model # TTx736A100A2 and serial # D19292223 does it have multiple rows of coils?

Answer

I looked up the unit and do not have access to see if it is single or double rowed.

Did the technician say how low of a charge you have on the system?

147 days and 8 hours ago.

Reply

yes, said it was down to 10 lb on the guage, and said it should be between 70-80 lbs.

Posted by Kenton Guidry 147 days and 8 hours ago.

Answer

That is very low.

You can inject a fluid that will show up under black light.

That would tell you where your leak is.

The technician should have access to this.

you been very honest, and i like that, you are light comming thru the cracks, and i know

that you know that light, specially sun light is a purefier in most cases. Thanks so far,

but what else should i ask the repair service company. Should i ask for another openion. How can i know that it has one or multi-coiles and it can not be fixed ? Where can i go to find out about the coil levels?

Answer

Thank you for your kind words.

Here is a picture of two coils.

The one on the right can be repaired because all the coils are accessible.

The one on the left can only be repaired if the leak is on the outer part of the coils.

If the leak is in the middle, it cannot be accessed to weld it.

I would take the information you now have and get a second opinion.
