Question

My basset hound has lost the use of his hind legs and is dragging himself around the yard. Other than that he's the same as he has always been. What can we do for him?

Is he able to support any weight on the back feet at all? Or are they limp?

Reply

He can't support any weight and his legs are limp

Accepted Answer

OK, thanks. I would recommend that you bring him to your veterinarian ASAP -- it sounds like he is having a spinal cord compression, possibly the result of a bulging disc in the spine, which is somewhat common in Basset Hounds.

Prompt treatment is essential if there's to be any hope of return of function in those back legs, so I would not recommend waiting for a veterinary exam.
