Answer
XXXXXXXXXX,
Just some clarification first...
The cable modem you have has the ability to go at 100mbs, your router has the ability to go at 1000mbs. When you have the router plugged into the cable modem using a network cable, it will be connected at the lowest speed of the two... so, it will use the 100mbs.
So, I'm guessing that where you see the 54mbs is on your wireless device (maybe a laptop)? This will be determined by the network card that you have installed in the laptop. If the network card has the ability to go at the speed of Wireless N (which is 270mbs max), then it will try to connect at that speed. However, reality kicks in, and the speed will be reduced based on wireless signal quality, distance from router, etc. So, the laptop network card will scale down the speed until it gives you the most reliable connection.
I hope this clarifies how this stuff works...
Please let me know if you have any questions.

So what you are telling me...My laptop cannot accept the faster speed. I would need to upgrade to receive the additional speed.?

I assume that the linksys people can upgrade my router for me to receive the 100 speed.

Info Request
XXXXXXXXXX,
That depends on what network card you have in your laptop right now... Is it a built-in wireless network card? What is the make and model of your laptop... I can find out for you.
I don't think your router needs to be upgraded... it's already at 1000mbs for wired connections, and 270mbs for wireless... much faster then anything else.
Thanks,
XXXX X.

We have two connected toshiba psmb0u-015007 and a aspire 3003 wlci {acer] 256 mb ddl
Answer
The Toshiba has this network card:
Wireless LAN : Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG (802.11a/b/g)
The "/g" means that it can go at 54mbs at the most... if you had a "/n", then it could go as fast as your router (270mbs)...
The Acer has this network card:
Wireless NIC Acer InviLink 802.11b/g
Which, again shows that it can only go at 54mbs.
In my honest opinion, unless you're going to be copying very large files, or watching movies over your wireless network, etc... you won't notice much speed difference by upgrading to the "N" series of network cards.
I hope this information helps.
