Question
Hi, I have a 5 year old Carrier AC, it runs OK. 30s after the AC stops, it gives out a high pitch squeaking sound. I have a AC repairman checked, he said the the high and low end pressure is not the same after AC if off, this indicates blockage in freon pipe. He recommends replacing freon(from $800 to $1700), is this a fair assessment?

Answer
It could be just the refrigerant has to equalize after shutting off because of the pressure differential between suction pressure 60-70 and discharge presssure 220-230 and this is norman fro the refrigerant to equalize after shutting down but normally does not make alot of noise. Considering that R-22 is about 7.50 a pound and you most likely have about 10 pounds I would say your getting hosed for the refrigerant change and its not going to have the effect you want on your noise problem
