Question

our 5 yr. old male pet rabbit seems very ill. He's dragging both hind legs. Plus his anus seems grossly enlarged, and is dragging on the floor. His turds are just laying in the crease of his enlarged hole. Because he's not making it to his litter box he also has a much more offensive odor then usual, and his feet are urine yellow   Any ideas what we should expect in coming days? Anything we can do for him? It kills me, but we're not going to take him to a VET. We just can't afford it.

we actually haven't done anything. We are in the process of selling our house, so a friend has been Bunny sitting him for 4 months. She just told me this afternoon that he is just laying there, he won't even get up to eat. We went over to check on him, and if I pet him near his hind quarters, he'd be obviously disturbed, although he allowed me to pick him up and hold him. We decided to bring him home cause I didn't want her little girls to have to deal with his possible death. While we were lifting him (in his cage) into the car, and had a higher vantage point, we noticed the enlarged anus dragging.

Hello,

This is Dr.Christian. Welcome to JustAnswer. Since you are currently offline, I will answer your question as best I can but if you need more clarification or have more questions I should be online off and on through the day. It sounds like your rabbit has suffered a severe back injury. It is unfortunately very common in rabbits and causes paralysis of the rear legs, anus and everything behind the injury. He may even be developing a prolapse of the rectum due to the lack of nerve function to the area. There are infections that can affect the spinal cord and cause this as well. Unfortunately, there is not much to be done and he is certainly suffering. I would encourage you, if at all possible to call around to local vets and tell them your situation. I suspect you can find someone that could put him to sleep for a low cost or in some cases for free. You even have the option of your local humane society. Otherwise he will continue to suffer over the next few days.
