Question

Hi,
I have a 2001 Ford Escape. It has a problem of starting (actually idling) after I've driven it and warmed it up, turned it off and try to start it again in about 10 minutes. It will start but immediately die. If I keep giving it gas it will keep going but as soon as I come to a stop sign and stop giving it gas it dies.   Once it has cooled off (maybe 20 -30 minutes later) it starts and idles fine. I've had a fuel system tuneup and a new fuel filter installed which hasnt helped. Any ideas?
Thanks, Terry

OK is the check engine light sounds like a faulty mass air flow sensro which you can try to clean and see if it makes a difference or possible faulty fast idle valve,is the check engine light on

No, the check engine light is NOT on. The station I took the car to hooked it up to 'the computer' which indicated a brake booster. Sounded fishy to me but they insisted it would make it run better. I said it never ran bad it just doesnt start when its warmed up. They emphasized 'the computer' and assured me it eventually would run bad if I didnt replace the brake booster. I did and drove it home the mile and half. I went inside for 10 minutes and came back to leave and it wouldnt start! And, now the brakes are spongy. seems it now needs a another valve to fix that.

Answer

Well if the brake booster is bad it will affect the brake master cylinder but if it had a vacuum leak the car would still start but idle high or up and down from a vacuum leak, like I said the common problems are the mass air flow sensor, throttle position sensor in the throttle body or fast idle valve these are what needs to be checked for this problem also reccomedn changing repair shops

Is there any reason why any one of these, the mass air flow sensor, the throttle position sensor or the fast idle valve, should not function properly when the car is warm but experience no problems once the car has cooled?

Answer

YEs its an electrical sensor and as it heats up that when if its bad will short out causing more resistance in the bad sensor sending the wrong signal to the cars computer causing it to stall or run rough

Ok, I just checked with the station and asked if those 2 sensors and 1 valve were checked and he said yes 'the computer' would have produced a code if it found any of those faulty.

Answer

No it will not always produce a code they have to be checked at the sensor itself,I would honestly try using a different shop that will actually look into the operation of the sensors and operation of the throttlebody to see what they are reading when the car is stalling

I understand. One last thought. A coworker had somewhat similar experience and his turned out to be the Idle Arm Motor (IAM). What d'ya think about that for mine?

Accepted Answer

Thats the idle air control motor is what i described before and its possible there is no part called idle arm motor
