Question

Hi I have a 15 year old plus Trane a/c that was not operating. It wasn't the fuse, or capcitor, but a power wire that had frayed and burned through the connector cap. Stripped the wire, and put on a new connector and it runs fine. The problem is when we put the cover back on, the pump stops running, but the fan still turns. Tech is thinking with the cover on, there is enough backpressure to overload the wire (which would explain the burned through power wire)...and cuts off. He offered three solutiosn 1) just leave the cover off, 2) replace with a Payne, but using old freon 3) replace with new Carrier unit, using new compliant freon--but would also require new coils.   First fix is free, second fix $1800 installed and third fix $3000. Do the prices sound right and does the diagnosis sound correct?

What cover are you referring to?

Those prices are on track.

Also, what pump are you referring to?

Just the protective cover on top of the fan that you take off with the screws...the screen. The compressor turns off, but the fan keeps going.

I know a little about electrical wiring and also checked for an exposed wire, or it touching the cover, it was strange. We were both perplexed on what could be causing the compressor to turn off.

This cover should not be related to the compressor.

Did the technician measure the amp draw on the compressor?

Did the technician check the capacitor?

He visually checked the capacitor and I looked at it, too. Looked fine, no bulges, rust, etc., but he did not put on a meter. He did not measure the amp draw on the compressor.

The owner who was on the phone, said there was an issue with the older Trane models, but I don't remember exactly what issue was...

The owner of the company is on vacation and we were walking through it on the phone at first, as he didn't want to charge me for an unnecessary visit so he walked me through some things I could check myself. I had the fuses checked, and they were fine (dual filament). I purchased new fuses just in case and inserted them into the fuse holder. There was a buzzing from the outside box. He thought it might be the capcitor, but that was fine. There was another set of wires, and the power wire was burned on the outside and grounding to the a/c unit. They cut the wire, stripped it, and re-connected it which seemed to fix the issue. Then, when they were finishing up, and put the cover back-on, the compressor would stop working.

Accepted Answer

Any time a compressor does not run the capacitors MUST be checked.

The amp draw also must be checked.

I really do not believe the cover being put back on hold any real impact on the compressor running.
