Answer

Hi sounds like you have a possible waterpump problem the vanes on the waterpumps have a tendency to come loose allowing the pump to turn on the spindle without the pump pushing the coolant round the engine normally plays up at idle, best way to check is remove the coolant reservoir cap (careful if engine is warm) rev the engine and watch to see if coolant is pushed out of the small pipe into the reservoir if no or very little coolant comes out chances are the pump is faulty. To check the thermostat check top and bottom hoses to radiator make sure both are hot after a road test, the only problem is that the waterpump if faulty can mimick the signs of a faulty thermostat and air lock, the waterpump iwhen removed can be checked if the vanes can be twisted while holding the front of the pump it is your problem best of luck Andy

Hi thanks andy - forgot to say that the overheating never happens when the car is on the motorway or moving at a areasonable speed - also most likey when the external temp is high (24deg or more) and that the heater doesn't always switch from hot to cold - takes a few goes with the dial for it to work - also the demister does not always blow hot even when the engine is overheated?

Accepted Answer

Hi Dave it may not overheat on motorways as the air pushing past the radiator will cool the engine ,obviously when at idle there is no air flow and the engine relies on the cooler coolant from the radiator being pushed round the engine, the heater inside the vehicle suffers because the coolant pipes that feed the matrix behind the dash are higher than the engine so the coolant cannot be pushed up and through the matrix, the heater not switching from hot to cold may be a differnt fault. My first step would be to check to see if coolant is circulating and coming back into the reservoir if not would suspect the waterpump.
