Question

I'm having problems with my central air unit- it won't start at all. The unit is 10 years old and I've never had a problem with it before.
This is what I've checked so far- 1) replaced the thermostat batteries, made sure the thermostat was set to cool, fan on auto, checked the circuit breaker. All are fine. When I turn the unit on, the fan on the furnace doesn't start. The fan on the outside unit tries to start, but can't (the fan in the outside unit moves, maybe once-twice around very slowly- then stops).
If I switch the thermostat to heat the furnace/fan kick right in...The problem seems to be only when I'm trying to cool.....Please help- heat index in Chicago this week is suppose to be close to 100!! Thanks in advance.

Answer

it sounds like you have a bad capasitor. its an engery call in the out door unit that helps get the compressor going. some units have a cap that has 3 ports in one

do you here the compressor going on it would sound like a huming noise something you may not be useto hearing beacuse most older models the fan noise can hide it if this is the case where you here the compresor making noise but the fan looks like it has no life its the cap

I'm somewhat confused- why doesn't the inside unit (furnace fan) run when it set to cool if the problem is with the outside unit?
There is no humming noise, no noise what so ever....
I appreciate your help, I just need some clarification...Is a capasitor expensive?

Accepted Answer

your airhandler ( inside unit ) is mostlikley fine all you are telling the unit to do ia provide a/c the indoor unit goes on to move the air and our side unit ( the compresor ) send the refrigent in side via pipes the compresor moves the refrigent and out side fan cools the heated gas from inside and returnes then cool back inside ( its a little more then that but this si the easyist way to explain it )

Answer

no a cap is not expensive but most a/s companys may be expensive during a time when a/c is needed an honest company will charge yo about 190 to 225 to install

but i do recomend that with a unit 10 y/o you may want a tune up

I appreciate your efforts, unfortunately, the capasitor was not the problem. I was lucky and had a family member check it out before I called an a/c person- they found the problem to be with my thermostat.
