Question

I took my 1999 Lexus ES 300 to Jiffy Lube for an oil change and they replaced the air filter also. A day later I got the check engine light and trac off light on. I took it to the nearest Toyota dealer (Lexus is too far) and they said it was the air filter sensor that needed to be replaced. Do you think Jiffy Lube broke it or that they did not change it properly. Toyota wants $400 for a new sensor. They assure me that it had nothing to do with the air filter change as they said it would have been a different code and the sensor is located near the exhaust.

Do you have the specific 4 digit code # that was stored?

No, I told them about the changed air filter and they said if that was it, it would be a different code.

Ok, by air sensor do you mean air fuel ratio sensor or a mass air flow sensor?

I think they said it was the mass air flow sensor. They claim it is located near the exhaust and not the air filter.

Accepted Answer

Ok, the mass air flow sensor is located ON the air filter box and the part is only about $150 so this is not your issue.

It sounds like you are trying to describe a air fuel ratio sensor. There are 2 of these sensors, one in each exhaust manifold on either side of the engine. You probably have a code like p1135 stored here. No this would NOT be related to your last service.

Yes this price is fair to replace, the part is about $260 plus another $140 to diagnose and replace is right on target. This is also a common fail item on the 1mz-fe engine. I have replaced these with as little as 20,000 miles or as much as 180,000 miles. They go at any time.
