Question

When I got home today.. I found my 14 year old golden retriever unable to get up and he had thrown up. I carried him out to go to the bathroom and he did stand for a bit, but VERY wobbly. He came back in on his own, but since laying down will not get up again. Any thoughts?

I highly recommend checking the color of his gums. If they are pale or a much lighter pink then usual he may be bleeding into the abdomen which is causing the weakness. This can be caused by a tumor on the liver or spleen which is very common in this breed at this age. Also, look to see if his abdomen is larger then normal. If you press on it and it is very hard or makes the sound of a drum when tapped he may be bloated. If the abdomen makes waves like a water bed, then this could indicate fluid is present. Also in dogs this age there could potentially be issues with heart disease. It is important that you have him seen and please inform the vet that you have given asprin because if he has bleeding into the abdomen then this could make things more difficult to treat.

Please let me know if further assistance is needed and do keep me updated on his condition.

I took him to vet today and he is being treated for vestibular disease... hopefully he will show improvement over next few days. Thanks for your help.

Answer

Great!!!! Improvement can take 2-3 weeks but you should see gradual improvement over the course of a week.
