Question

Hi ! My car is in good condition , 61K miles , has K&N cold intake kit installed , gonna install MSD wire set along with NGK Iridium spark plugs - have no doubt about effect !
What I am gonna do and have questions : I'd like to replace factory supercharger puller 3.8 " with smaller 3.4 "size . Does it bring much more boost as promised and what of the following should I replace/add : install new supercharger Gatorback belt , change supercharger oil   , install transmission intercooler ( is it nesessary ? ) , change transmission fluid and refill with synthetic fluid Mobil1 ATF ???

Answer

Hi XXXXXXXX,

A transmission cooler would be a good idea as heat is what kills transmission. If you do get one, get a "stack plate design" as apposed to the "tube and fin" design. The stack plate design is way more efficient and they look exactly like the ones B&M sells (Long is the company that makes it so if you do a search for LONG transmission coolers you will find various options, get the biggest one that will fit)

As for the upgrades, a 3.4" pulley would be the smallest I would get with your modifications. I would almost recommend getting a 3.5" instead. With a 3.4" you will need PCM reprogramming to go along with the K&N filter. After you install the 3.4" and reprogram your PCM, the next step would be to go to muffler shop and have them replace the "U Bend" in your exhuast where the O2 sensor goes. This should be around $20-$80 and will free up your exhuast significantly.

If you go smaller than a 3.4" pulley you will creat too much heat and loose HP. With a 3.4" pulley you should be around 11PSI boost (stock is around 7-8PSI) I have been moding these cars for 9 years (you can google 12SECGP, that is my car). I changed my trans fluid to Mobile 1 (even though you may here otherwise) and installed a shift kit. I have 194K miles on my car, stock transmission, only have a trans cooler and shift kit. Been running Mobile 1 synthetic since it had 55K miles. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask. Thanks.

Hi ! Thank you for your answer... I understand that You do NOT recommend to install pulley 3.4 " . And what if I install 3.5 size pulley...Do I have to install intercooler anyway or i can skip this option ?

Hi XXXXXXXX,

IF you DO install a 3.4" pulley, I HIGHLEY recommend you reprogram your PCM and remove the U-Bend in the exhaust near the catalyst. This is because when you increase the boost, you also increase the heat in the manifold. Exhaust restriction will also cause excessive heat in the combustion chamber and these will lead to cracking/chipping pistons. A modified PCM will run a little richer under boost and could help prevent this.

IF you DO install a pulley without modding the PCM and exhaust, then I would play it safe and install a 3.5" pulley instead.

If you plan on madding the exhaust and PCM soon after you install a pulley, then a 3.4" would be fine as long as you are not going wide open throttle like every day. Once in awhile should be fine but I wouldnt wait more than a 3-4 months before doing the rest of the mods. A gatarback belt would be a good idea with either option. If you use a 3.5" pulley, the belt should be the same as with the stock pulley, a 3.4" pulley would require a smaller belt (P/N XXXXXXX). Let me know if you have further questions.

The "intercooler" will actually be an external cooler for the transmission (not an intercooler for the supercharger). An external cooler for the transmission is highly required no matter what pulley you instal.

Only if you go below a 3.0" pulley will you need a intercooler for the supercharger. But an external cooler for the transmission is highley recommend.
