Question
My teenage daughter has just started her first job. Don't expect her to gross more than 2,700 for the summer. How many federal tax exemptions may she claim? It appears that she is exempt from Virginia withholding?

Hello cindy,
As long as she does not earn more than $5,700 for the year, she will not owe any federal or state tax.
She should just fill out her W-4 form as exempt, and then nothing will be withheld from her checks except for social security and medicare taxes which are always required to be paid.

Thank you cindy.
