Question
I'm installing 120v Pucks under kitchen cabinets. These come with 6 foot flexible wires attached. I'd like to hard wire these to the existing outlets between counter top and cabinets. Does National code allow me to take the existing puck wire (which is UL rated) and run behind drywall into junction box to connect to existing outlet? Basicaly, wire would be exposed from puck, under cabinet, as it traverses to back of cabinet. There, a hole would be drilled in the bottom edge of cabinet. Wire passes through hole, down to junction box.

No - and I know this stinks but the only way to hard wire these is touse romex wiring sized to the breaker protecting that circuit. So if its a 20amp then it will be 12ga wire. If its 15amps then it would be 14ga. Unfortunately you cannot use flexible wiring through walls and tie them into the junction box.

Okay, thought that might be case. I'll connect romex. Must I then have a little junction box in cabinet where I connect the puck wire to romex? Any very small boxes available? I know I can't just use exposed wire nuts at this connection.

Here is a suggestion passed onto me by another expert. Install outlets in the back of the cabinet. Then you can take and plug the light directly into that outlet. The wire would be routed directly up through the cabinet and into the outlet. That would make this a legal install. But again for you to hard wire this into a junction box is not legal. Even if the j-box is in the back of the cabinet. That is why installing the regular outlet is a better choice.
