Question

hi, my 8 month old female rabbit appears to be bleeding where she pee's in her hutch. i have also noticed a few other spots where she has been sitting. last week she had her molars rasped at the vets as they had grown too long. since then i have been giving her more variety of veg on a daily basis to keep them filed down. could it be connected?

Info Request

Hello,

Rabbits sometimes urinate red, so we need to determine if this is really blood. Examine your rabbit carefully to see if any blood is oozing from her vagina or rectum. Let me know what you find.

In the red spots where she has been sitting, does it look like she urinated, or is it thick like blood?

Thank you for the additional information.

on closer inspection of her hutch area, it does look more of a deep orange red colour, than blood red i guess. as she is not particularly sociable rabbit, she wont let you pick her up., so cant see where it is directly coming from. have cleaned her out and see if anymore appears i guess,. how long do you suggest i do this for?

Accepted Answer

Thank you for getting back to me. I suspect that what you're seeing is normal urine. It's normal for rabbit urine to change colors, and shades of orange to red are common. Your rabbit's urine may stay this color for awhile, or it may not. The color changes depend on what the rabbit is eating and the levels of certain hormones in the body. The variety of vegetables you're feeding could be responsible. If you live in an area where there's snow in the winter and where wild rabbits live, you can follow their trails and see that they, too, often have urine this color. You can read more about what's normal and what's not at the following site. The section on color is toward the bottom.

If there is actual blood coming from the vagina or rectum, that's a sign of a serious problem, and your rabbit would need to be seen by a vet. Just keep looking several times a day, and if you see blood from one of these openings, call your vet. I suspect that you probably won't find anything, but it's best to be safe.

Spaying is an excellent idea for pet rabbits. As female rabbits get older, they tend to develop reproductive system disorders - infections, tumors, mammary tumors, etc. Spaying prevents these health conditions. Sexual maturity also often brings behavior problems, and spaying takes care of that, too. You can read more about the effects of sexual maturity and how they relate to spaying at this site:
