Question

My 6 year old rabbit was the perfect pet until a year ago when she started to urinate when outside of her cage. I don't believe anything in her enviornment changed nor did she have any typical signs of a health problem like an infection. It started occuring only once in a while and now it happens about eveyday. I always get onto her and have her go into her cage. I always clean the area well with pet carpet cleaner designed to destroy all odor. I clean her cage outside once a year also. This problem stated to occur a few months after she was spayed. She was spayed at age 5. It kind of seems like it's a behavior for more attention, but despite how much I give her she will hop away, look at me and lift her tail. There are no vets near by that really know rabbits and their health. What can I try or do?

Hello and thanks for researching this very important question...I am sorry that you are having this difficult experience.

Unfortunately, your observation that this started so quickly after her spay surgery leads me to think most of all that this is a physical and not behavioral problem.

It is very common for female mammals (including people, dogs, cats) to experience reduced bladder control when their primary estrogen supply has been removed. If you are finding urine at random spots (and not one primary marking location), then this is supportive of reduced bladder tone.

This is an article that gives a good list of things to consider when urine is deposited in the "wrong" places:

Sometimes a replacement hormone has helped some of these Bunny Gals, but there is not much real data about successfulness and safety of this type of treatment...and basically, you spayed her to protect her against hormonal health side effects.

The strategy at home would be:

1) Eliminate her exposure to rooms with carpet and wood flooring.

2) Return her to her enclosure at frequent intervals to see if she can learn to empty herself and then resume her play. Since she was so reliably clean before surgery, this may help quite a lot.

3) I don't know anyone who's tried it, but since Necessity Is The Mother of Invention, you might consider some newborn infant sized diapers...which she might hate...if assisted potty runs are not successful.
