Question
Hi – I was just looking for some general legal advice on my membership with Great Expectations dating service (I imagine you’ve heard of complaints from them before).
I signed up with their organization 6 years ago, and (to say the least) was very disappointed with the results I’ve had (2 dates out of 30 selections). My membership is set to expire soon and I just recently looked online to see how others have felt in being members of their organization, and I see many stories similar to my experience – strong arm sales tactics, a "counselor' who did not return phone calls, a misrepresentation of how many eligible singles were / are available (I can go into details where parts of my experience was some basis of a filed by the AZ state’s atty in June 2008).
So I was just curious as to what my legal options are here in IL in getting some or all of the $4, 290 back that was paid up front in June '03 (plus additional fees for additional services charged over the years).
Thank you!

Hi,
I am sorry to hear about your situation. When you have a contract dispute your best bet is to take action when the problem occurs. Since you are near the end of your contract, your chances of suing and winning become less because it may be inferred you were happy with the service while you were receiving it.
However, Great Expectations has had legal problems and attorney generals in different states have filed suits against the company. Your best chance of getting some of your money back may likely be by contacting the Illinois Attorney General’s office and the Better Business Bureau and file complaints. The Ag’s office will write and assist on your behalf as well as the BBB. If the AG’s office finds there is a lot of bad business going on or many complaints about the company, the office may file a civil suit against the company.
Last, you may file a law uit against the company. You would be filing in small claims court. You can allege a breach of contract that the company did not perform the contract as promised. At that point, it will be how well you argue to the judge and what evidence you have to support your claim that you may win.
