Question

My cat is a Cornish Rex. There are one or two spots on the edge of his out ear (flap) that is inflamed and scabby looking. Used Panalog which seems to help get rid of the scabby looking skin but the inflamation remains.

Answer

Dear friend,

I am sorry your boy is dealing with these "spots".Dab on some plain neosporin and see if that helps.

Fortunately cats do not get as many skin conditions as dogs so they are much easier to diagnose and treat. They can be allergic reactions, fungus or infection.

Here is the most common with photos:

Stud tail:and feline acne

Ringworm:

Hot spots:

Ringworm can be recurrent and is treated with a topical fungicide or a vaccine shot.

miliary dermatitis can come from a food allergy or the bite of even ONE flea. This is treated with one cortesone shot or neosporen it is safe it he licks a bit.

Granuloma is also usually allergic in nature and can be treated cortesone or antibiotics or both.

There is also alopecia which is usually symmetrical and can be self inflicted:

A staph infection is also a possibility and can recur at times when the immune system is weakened temporarily.

Please look at the photos and let me know which best relates to your cats issues and I will be happy to discuss this further with you.

Best regards,

Terri

Looks like ringworm but not too sure. I'm in Australia. Is betadine the same as neosporin?

Answer

Hi there,

You can use betadine but it won't cure ringworm (which is contagious even to you)

Get an antfungal like monostat or desonex at a drug store and apply twice a day. Be sure to rub in well so he cannot lick it off and wash thoroughly so you don't catch it.

Kindest regards,

Hi Terri

One last question. Is Canesten the same as Monostat or Desonex. Goggle the last 2 on Australian websites and Canesten came up instead. Thank you.

Kind regards
