Question

I have a 07 trailblazer ss and the power steering gear has a leak, it is comming from the drain plug on the bottom back side of the steering gear? Is there a seal behind that drain plug or is that even a drain plug?

Answer

Hello Ductman,

That is the agjustment plug for the Rack. There is no repair for this. The rack would have to be replaced to fix the leak. It is common for them to "sweat" oil around it there. What we do at the dealer under warranty is to clean them off and have the customer return in a week or so and see how much fluid actually leak out. GM won't let us replace them unless it is really bad.
The front differental pinion seal is in that area also. we see a lot of those leak. make sure that is not spraying oil on the rack.
How bad is it leaking?

It is a constant drip from the adjustment plug. There is that metal ring that has notches cut on it on that is that goes around the adjustment bolt/plug. Almost looks like a giant washer around the adjustment bolt/plug. The drip is comming from the back side of that metal ring It has already leaked about 1-2 cups of fluid on the ground just sitting so far. I'm not sure if it is actually spraying anywere though.

Answer

Yea the whole rack would need to be replaced. How many miles on the SS?

I replaced a rack on one of these last year form them leaking that much. Very rare to see on these.

It has 24,400 miles on it. I actually took it to the dealership and they replaced a few seals on it about a week ago and it seemed to stop the leak then out of the blue tonight I got back from getting some food and noticed a fluid trail going up the driveway and looked underneath and saw the constant dripping with a nice puddle of fluid.

Yea, Thats why I replace the entire Rack and pinion instead of trying a seal.
