Question

Can I give my labrador Delsym for kennel cough. My last vet suggested giving Delsym and I used it on one of my dogs and it helped her tremendously.

Now my other lab has kennel cough and I think he should have some medicine to calm the cough down. However my current vet says not to give anything.   I'm not happy letting my dog cough like this for a week.

Can I safely give my dog Delsym, what is the rule on this. Is there something else that's better?

Age: 8; Male; Breed: Yellow lab

I have not tried anything yet. I used Delsym in the past but now I am being told not to use it. What's the ruling on this? I used Delsym previously and it worked wonders. BTW I used Delsym pediatric.

Hello,

Different vets feel differently about the use of cough syrups for dogs. The fact is many vets do recommend Delsym for dogs when they have a cough. Our clinic does incorporate the use of Delsym at the dosage of dogs under 10 pounds get a child's dose and larger breeds get a adult dose. It is non narcotic so it is not toxic to dogs, though it is always advisable to follow your vets recommendation so I can not tell you to go against what you vet recommends.

Thank you for your quick response. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't remembering something incorrectly. I will talk to my vet to make sure we are on the same page. I just don't want my dog to be uncomfortable. The last time I experienced kennel cough it was just awful and my dog even had trouble sleeping. Thanks again!!

Answer

Your very welcome, if your vet is still against it you may want to ask him about Robitussin as this is also often used.
