Info Request

Hi Michael,

What do you mean "she still has struvite"?

She has no stones?

Any cystitis or baacteria in her urine?

Thanks,

Terri

still struvite in her urine.
no bacteria grown after culture and sensitivity and not stones in bladder.
she has had an ultrasound scan done and no sign of inflammation of the bladder wall

Answer

Dear Michael,

I am sorry your girl is dealing with this. You can read about struvite stones and crystals here:

http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_canine_struvite_bladder_stones.html

You will notice that some patients remain with crystals for life. However, the renal food is stoping the formation of large stones which often have to be removed surgically.

Continue to add water to her food and encourage drinking to keep her bladder flushed. She can also have a few drops of craanberry juice daily to lower the PH of her urine and make her bladder inhospitable to UTI bacteria.

Please let me know if you still have questions and how she is doing.

I hope all will be well and she is better very soon.

Best wishes for her,

Terri

what renal food would you suggest?
if the patient has the struvite for life does the pateint need to be on the renal food and does it cause any problems e.g should the dog not be used for breeding?

Accepted Answer

Hi Michael,

I recommend you stay with the WD or Royal Canin renal food.

I honestly would not breed a girl with struvite history because it will be very stressful for her to carry and nurse pups. Plus renal food is not appropriate for a pregnant dog to eat as it does not have the proper balance of nutrients.

I hope she will be fine.

Best wishes for her,

Terri
