Question

Hi

Our 20 yr. old cat was recently diagnosed with CRF on his 6 th month blood test for hyperthyroidism (had this 2 yrs.). Vet immediately took him off his hypoth. tablets, gave him his annual vaccination and gave me Renalzin and a liver medicine. Another blood test tomorrow (19th) Our cat was okay before his visit to vet., but since then he has been "up and down" - sometimes his old self- other times subdued and not eating much, and overnight became so "picky" with food, often shaking his head as he eats I am cooking chicken, mincedlamb, fish for him but his appetitie has reduced.   Refuses food with the Renalizin in and when I have got a tiny amount into his he vomits.

Yesterday he had a good day. Ate more and looked brighter, but he threw up after supper due to a tiny amount of renalzin Since then subdued again now refusing food, drinking tiny amounts, still shakes head but he seems hungry, lying near his food dish.
On phone vet doesn't seem to know.

Optional Information

Age: >12; Male; Breed: cat

Already Tried:
To get him to eat:
home cooked chicken, fish, lamb all finely minced and well moistened and warmed up to give an encouraging aroma.
Nothing else added. Petfood cat milk. Baby food, porridge, creamed rice, his regular shop bought cat food.
Tried hand feeding and strloking him when he is near his dish. He holds his chin over the dish close tot he food as if he wants it then moves away. This head shaking/twitching only occurs when he is eating or trying to eat and drink. I wokndered if it is his teeth or ulcers due to crf. His 2 years on the hy7perthyroid tablets have been fine and he was stabilised. The vet has taken him off them temporarily to assess a blood test tomorrow. I spend a lot of time with him and he is mainly lying around but still walks to his litter tray and to his food/water bowls

Answer

Dear friend,

I am sorry your boy is ill. You have done a fabulous job to have a twenty year old kitty!!Ask the vet if his medication can be compounded into a TRANSDERMAL salve that is applied to the ear.If not it can be added to tuna or baby food.

I can give you several recipes that were formulated by Hills and distributed to vets berfore Science diet was on the market. Royal canin makes a very palatable renal food as well.

C/D or H/D recipe - feline (also known as Feline Restricted Mineral and Sodium Diet):
1 lb regular ground beef, cooked
1/4 lb liver (beef, chicken or pork only) cooked
1 cup cooked white rice without salt
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 t (5g) calcium carbonate (Tums)
1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (salt substitute)

Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the feline minimum daily requirements (MDR) for all vitamins and trace minerals, and 250 mg of taurine per day. This would be available from a veterinary clinic.

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield: 1+3/4lbs

Feeding Guide - feed sufficient to maintain normal body weight

Body wt Approx Daily Feeding
5lb 1/5lb
7-8lb 1/4lb
10lb 1/3lb

K/D recipe - feline

(also known as Feline Restricted Protein Diet):

1/4 lb liver (beef, chicken or pork only)

2 cups cooked white rice without salt

2 large hard-cooked eggs

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 t (5g) calcium carbonate (Tums)

1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride (salt substitute)

Also add a balanced supplement which fulfills the feline minimum daily requirements (MDR) for all vitamins and trace minerals, and 250 mg of taurine per day. This would be available from a veterinary clinic.

Dice and braise the meat, retaining fat. Combine all ingredients and mix well. This mixture is somewhat dry and its palatability can be improved by adding a little water (not milk). Keep covered in refrigerator. Yield: 1+1/4lbs

Feeding Guide - feed sufficient to maintain normal body weight

Body wt Approx Daily Feeding

5lb 1/4lb

7-8lb 1/3lb

10lb 2/5lb

Lying by the bowl can be a syptom of dehydration which is comon in renal cats.

Offer milk or tuna water to drink.

Give a half a pepsid a/c for vomiting:

Cats are attracted to smelly foods - the stronger the better. If he wants tuna, give it to him.You can also try fancy feast, clam juice or baby food.

human baby food in meat flavours (check that there are no onions or garlic in the ingredients) and mix that with warm water and offer that, or syringe it in little bits into your cat's mouth. Beech Nut makes a line of baby food that has nothing but meat (beef, chicken, turkey or veal) in it. Here's a link: http://www.beechnut.com/Our%20Baby%20Food/Results.asp If you cannot find this, you could find another meat baby food - just read the label carefully to be sure there are no onions, onion powder, garlic, or garlic powder in it.

Cats with only 25% of kidney function can do fine via SubQ fluids which can even be administered at home:
