Question

Older Vanguard boat with a Chrysler 55 hp.   Starts very good and idles ok too, but on occasion when cruising at moderate speeds it seems to act like it jumps out of gear very quickly then back to normal?? Not sure if it is the prop disengaging or a fast miss from the coils.

hello, if the motor throttles up ok in gear to high speed but then has a hickup its a misfire from either a quick no spark or a blockage in the carb. but more than likely its a spark issue. replace spark plugs to eliminate them as a factor then move on to the coils. the rest of the electrical system requires the use of special equipment to test.

Answer

then its an electrical problem in the ignition circuit which requires the use of a peak reading voltmeter to check charge coil and sensor coil output.
