Hello and welcome to Just Answer.

I'm not sure I understand what you are asking. The car has to be driven to update the key. The mileage is not always exactly the same as the car. I've seen them be several miles off but it should be closer to the mileage when the car was shut off.

I think you answered the question but just let me elaborate a little more. My son said the someone stole our car and smashed it up in the neighbourhood we live in. The insurance company has stated the car had to be driven with a key there is no ignition (I agree)damage and they have advised that we have all keys.(we do) They have advised that a key needed to drive the car and have told us what key was last used to drive the car. They had the odometer reading of the key done at a dealership. Hence the difference of 3 kilometers between the car and the key. The vehicle was found roughly 3 kilometers from our home smashed up, my son has said he is not involved However?

Answer

I would not take the mileage reading from the key as gospel. Like I said, They can be off as much as a few miles.

Modern BMW's are very difficult if not impossible to steal without a key. That seems a little fishy if all the keys are still in your possession.
