Question

I have just administered Advocate tube to my small dog. Apparently it does not control tapeworms as well and I am advised to use Drontal for the tapeworm. My concern is - wouldn't he be overdosed - as both medicines treat almost the same parasites. How often a dog needs to be protected against tapeworm. I am giving him Advocate monthly. I have chosen Advocate, as my pomeranian is quite finicky and it is impossible to trick him to swallow any medicine - hi spits it out - even the vet can't win.

Thanks for writing in,

Drontal is the drug of choice for controlling tapes in dogs. Tapeworms are transmitted by ingesting an infected flea. SO flea control is the first line protection against tapes. If your dog is on a quality flea control product then your dog does not need to be dewormed on a regular basis for tapes unless he ingests one and you see tapeworm segments in the stool. If you are seeing tapeworm segments then I would wait just a few days to administer the Drontal as the Advocate is out of the body by then. It doesn't linger for a month so it is safe to use something shortly thereafter. I hope this helps!

Also, the active ingredient Praziquantel is available in an injectible format that your vet can give if orals are too difficult.LSU-Vet39980.5844623495

Thanks so much for your answer. I understand that - I there is no apparent tapeworm segment in the stool, where is not need to give my dog Drontal.
Also - giving him every month Advocate - since it provides flea control - does that mean that he will be protected against tapeworm. Just making sure I understand correctly.
But - what if he ingest (swallows) an infected flea when socializing with other animals - would the Advocate help?
And - the last one - the active ingredient Praziquantel - is it like Drontal or like Advocate?
