Question

My sister has an 8 year old Labrador Retriever that has developed a strong repulsive odor. The smell seems to be coming from under his neck and inside legs.   The dog not been nutered. The smell is also strongest on weekends when they take the dog to Lake Eufalla.
He naturally gets in the lake and drinks water from it. Any ideas on getting rid of, or elemanating the smell? Thank you Ken

Thanks for the question XXXXXXXXX.

While I cannot diagnose this over the internet I can tell you the following :

I have come up against this problem a few times, there are only a few scenarios which would make a dog smell like this, I will work through them.

1. Anal glands : These are located under your dog's tail and their function is to produce a strong scent, in fact it is the same gland that the skunk has. In domestic dogs they can sometimes become impacted and so cause a smell. Before you do anything else have your vet check the glands over, this is a simple matter.

2. Ear disease : Ear disease { otitis externa } is a common cause of smells in dogs especially dogs with fold over ears like Labs. Have a look in your dogs ears, look for redness or discharge. Also see if there is a strong smell from the area. If there is aproblem here your vet should be able to prescribe some antibiotic ear drops.

3. Low grade dermatitis : This can cause dog's coats to smell particularly when wet, this can be caused by a bacterial or fungal infection. When it is a low grade infection you might not see any other symptoms. The remedy here would be to wash the dog in a prescription shampoo such as Malaseb which acts against the common bacteria and fungi found on dog's skins, do this once a week.

Try the above three suggestions before you go any further ...

If I have not covered your question fully enough or you would like to ask more I will be online for the next hour or so and I will be at your disposal.
