I have a mercury classic 50 1989. The motor starts and runs fine with muffs but when I put it in the water it idles Ok when I give it gas it dies?

sounds like a problem in the carbs. What is the service history? do you have any fuel filters in line? is this the first time trying to run it this year, if no have you checked spark and compression?
