I purchased a used MacBook (2007) on ebay. The screen seems washed out. I could improve it somewat using Universal Access. What else should i try. Is this a defect? Can it be repaired.

Go to System Preferences -> Displays and ensure your brightness is all the way up and that colors are set to millions and not thousands. If these settings are correct and you have already turned down the contrast in System Preferences -> Universal Access then it sounds like your screen might be worn down. If the macbook is still under warranty then I'd see if apple will replace it, but from working there, I know they're very stubborn on screen replacements of all things. You could purchase a macbook lcd screen for relatively cheap (
