It sounds like your external hard drive is formatted as FAT32 and finder limits transfer files over 4GB. First lets check to see what format your external drive is. Mount your external drive to your desktop then Control+Click on the drive. From the contextual menu click 'Get Info'. When the get info window appears look for the 'Format:' of the drive.

Format MS-DOS(FAT32)

Ok here are two ways around this issue. You can use a program called Pathfinder (http://www.cocoatech.com/ ) which works like finder and shouldn't through up that error message when you try to transfer that file again.

Another way is to use a program called Split & Concat ( http://www.xs4all.nl/~loekjehe/Split&Concat/ ) which will split your large file up into as many pieces as needed (preferably under 4gb a piece so finder can move them) and then piece them back together when you get the filed moved over.
