Question

Last Sunday, I have found one of my koi fish with a cut near the gill and what appeared to be a bit of blood or even a fine line of enthrails trailing (still attached to the cut/gill).; I have given a salt and bacteria treatment to the water and will repeat the treatment again tomorrow. Today I found the fish lying sideways at the bottom of the water, as if dead. Is there a course of treatment or is my fish going to die. I suspect it's chilling of the swimbladder due to the cold weather we have been experiencing recently. I do not have a heated pond and am considering taking the fish to a vet, which I may not see until next Thursday. Meanwhile I appreciate some suggestions as to how can I treat my koi fish.

Info Request

Hi.

I want to be able to understand the symptoms 100% so as to make a correct diagnosis and recommend a proper treatment.

Could you clarify what "enthrails" are?

I mean entrails. I could have been wrong. It looked like a gummy trail of blood (approx. 6 cm in lenght) hanging from the gill and half an our later when we checked the fish, it was no longer there.

Thank you for the clarification.

I don't think that swim bladder disease is the problem here as

from what you've described it appears the fish is suffering from gill parasites. You mentioned that the weather has been cold where you're located and this drop in pond water temperature most proabably stressed the fish thus leaving them it open to disease.

The adding of pond salt was fine but the bacterial medicine won't cure a parasite problem so what I suggest you do is make sure the pond salt is dosed at the appropriate level as I'm not sure if you underdosed. The product label on the salt product will state the amount of salt to add per litre.

After verifying and adjusting, if needed, the salt, level begin to treat the fish/pond with an anti-parasitic medicine designed to treat gill parasites. Listed below are 4 links. The first 3 links will show you medicines more easily found in the UK and the fourth link a medicine more easily found in Australia. Whatever medicine you decide to use just follow the directions on the product label for usage.

Best wishes and please let me know if you have any questions.

Sorry not to reply earlier but I do accept the answer given. Perhaps it came a bit too late as my fish has now been burried in my garden. I did isolate the fish and gave the treatment as directed. Though it was lying continually on one side, the gills were still moving on the first day of the treatment, on the second day the vital signs were no longer there. Never mind. I have learnt with this experience that perhaps I should have sought advice earlier. I would like to thank you for the prompt reply at the time.
