Question

Have 1996 Mitsubishi Diamante and have the good old squeal in belt that runs a.c. compressor. Have sprayed "belt dressing" several times...but it soon slicks out and starts squealing again. The local garage will "tighten" the belt for $70 but I know I could tighten it myself...even a little bit..would make it tight enough to stop squealing. I have had the squeal ever since dealer "put on new belt" for me...uh huh....but just need to know where to tighten .what tools , and how to get to the right belt and right tightening place! PS you guys helped me replace blower motor for heat /ac and your advice and a new $46 blower moter did the trick....bless you! Now need to tighten belt and I'll be in bidness! Regards JOHN

John its not really hard to tighten belts .. just sometimes hard to get to. On your vehicle you have belt tensioners. I have inclosed a diagram to tell you where they are located. Usually the front side of the sensioner pulley will have a 14mm nut holding it steady this nut must be loosened slightly. NOT REMOVED. just enough for the pulley to be able to slide. Then at the top or directly bottom of the assymbley there will be a bolt to tighten or loosen the belt tensioner. See diagram Little difficult to explain. but when you tighten this bolt it will pull the pulley along with the belt to tighten. just remember to tighten the nut on the face of this tensioner pulley when done. or else you may loose a pulley and belt later.
